Ouellette?s Run In NCAA Men?s Tennis Singles Draw Comes To A Close
Saturday, May 28, 2005 | Men's Tennis
University of Florida men's tennis newcomer Greg Ouellette (Ormond Beach, Fla.) advanced farther than any other freshman in the nation in the NCAA Singles draw before he was defeated in the quarterfinal round by Baylor's top-seeded and Benedikt Dorsch (6-4, 6-2) Saturday afternoon in College Station, Texas.
Ouellette finished his first season in Gainesville with an overall record of 39-10, which was the third highest amount of wins on UF's all-time single season chart.
The UF freshman picked up three straight wins in order to advance to the quarterfinals. He opened the tournament on Wednesday by upsetting Washington eighth-seeded and sixth-ranked Alex Vlaski (7-5, 0-6, 6-2). In the round of 32 he posted a straight set victory against Virginia Tech's Stephane Rod to move into the round of 16 where he edged South Alabama's 16th-ranked Fraticek Babej (6-4, 2-6, 7-5).
Ouellette's loss completed one of the most successful seasons by a first year member of the squad. He spent the majority of the season at the No. 2 and No. 3 court in the singles lineup where he went 11-0 against SEC dual match opponents becoming the first Gator to do so under fourth-year head coach Andy Jackson.
Ouellette was selected as a first-team All-SEC representative and was named the SEC Freshman of the Year. He was also honored by the ITA as the Southeast Region ITA Rookie of the Year.
Florida boasts a pair of NCAA singles champions and one NCAA doubles championship team in its history. Mark Merklein won the 1994 singles championship, while Jeff Morrison did so in 1999. The duo of Merklein and David Blair won the doubles title in 1993.
