Matt Every And Brett Stegmaier Advance At U.S. Amateur

University of Florida seniors Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) each made the cut at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Admore Pa.
The Gator duo is tied for 36th after completing the final round of stroke-play at the Merion Golf Club and Philadelphia Country Club. Stegmaier led the way by lowering his opening-round score by three strokes to finish with a 71 (+1). A trio of birdies on the back-nine helped Stegmaier advance into the next round with a total score of 145. Every also made three birdies, but found himself in trouble on the 12th and 15th holes at Philadelphia CC. He also finished stroke-play with a 145.
Senior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) tied for 202nd and did not make the cut.
The tournament moves into match-play, which begins Wednesday morning. Stegmaier will face Brian Carroll of Crystal Lake, Ill. At 8:10 a.m. Every will face George Bryan of Columbia, S.C. at 9:40 a.m. The winners will advance to the second round of match-play on Thursday.
