W-Tennis: UF?s Alexis Gordon Wins Consolation Singles Final at NCTC

University of Florida women's tennis senior Alexis Gordon captured the consolation singles title at the National Collegiate Tennis Classis Sunday afternoon at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Gordon defeated Northwestern's Georgia Rose 6-3, 6-3 in the final to claim her fourth career singles title. What makes Gordon's title even more impressive is the fact that this weekend was her first competitive tennis matches since May 2004, taking time away from the courts for personal reasons.
Gordon also teamed with sophomore Whitney Benik in the semifinals of the main draw, but lost to Southern California's Lindsey Nelson and Luana Magnani 8-5.
“The highlight of this weekend was seeing Alexis back on the court wearing a Gator uniform,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “She lost her first round match, but ran through the consolation draw and soundly beat a very talented opponent in Georgia Rose in the final.
“Overall, I think we saw that our doubles is a little ahead of where we anticipated, but out our singles play is a little behind. Now, we have specific things to work on during practice before opening our dual match season on January 25th.”
Gator also were in action on Sunday at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships played in Las Vegas, where the doubles team of Alex Liles and Nina Suvak lost their pickup match to Arizona State's Laila Abdala and Sabrina Capannolo 8-4. Desert rain and hail shortened the other action at the event.
The Gators next begin their 2005-06 dual match season on Wed., January 25, playing host to UCF at 5 p.m. Admission is FREE.
