Pair of Gator Netters Record Victories at SEC Indoor Championships
Saturday, January 21, 2006 | Men's Tennis
Two University of Florida men's tennis players registered wins in the opening round of singles action at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships Friday, which were held at the University of Kentucky's Boone Tennis Center and Lexington Tennis Club. Junior All-American Janne Holmia (Tampere, Finland) and senior Ryan Sherry (Fort Meyers, Fla.) both recorded victories on the first day of competition.
Holmia defeated Pierre Mouillon in three sets by a final count of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and will move onto Saturday's second round, facing the SEC Indoors No. 1-seeded John Isner of Georgia. Isner disposed of South Carolina's Pedro Rodrigues 6-1, 6-2.
At the opposite end of the singles bracket, Sherry won 6-3, 6-2, in straight sets over Tennessee's David Baxendine. Sherry takes on second-seeded Strahinja Bobusic of Georgia Saturday.
“Overall, I thought we played reasonably well the first day,” Florida head coach Andy Jackson said. “Janne didn't play tennis for a year and came away with a nice win in a difficult match. We'll work on getting better tomorrow.”
In other singles action, freshman Shaun Young (Brandon, Fla.), senior All-American Chris Brandi (Gainesville, Fla.) and sophomore Nestor Briceno (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) each suffered defeats on the first day of singles action and will compete in the event's consolation round.
Doubles results were unavailable at the end of the night and will be posted Saturday morning. Check back to www.GatorZone.com for complete results and recaps following the conclusion of each day's action.
Play from the SEC Indoors continues Saturday, Jan. 21, in Lexington, and will run through the final round on Monday, Jan. 23. Sunday and Monday's rounds will feature live stats online at www.ukathletics.com.
