Monday, October 23, 2006 | Men's Tennis
University of Florida men's tennis junior Greg Ouellette claimed the championship in the singles draw Monday at the ITA Region III Indoor Qualifying Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. With the showing, Ouellette earned a trip to the ITA Indoor Championship next month in Columbus, OH.
Ouellette (No. 26) began the day with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory in the semifinals against No. 42 Ivan Bjelica of Mississippi State to earn a spot in the championships against Georgia's fifth-ranked Travis Helgeson. With both players having qualified for the indoor championships, the Bulldog junior withdrew prior to the match awarding Ouellette the win.
"Overall, I thought our tournament was good as a team and Greg's was outstanding," said UF head coach Andy Jackson. "I thought Greg played well particularly indoors and showed a lot of improvement. If he plays as well as he's been playing then he has a chance to make a major impact at the indoor championships. The talent at the qualifying tournament was high quality and will not be far off of the national tournament."
Ouellette posted a 7-0 record over the four-day event which began last Friday with 160 competitors. He is now 8-1 on the fall and 49-12 in his Florida career.
The ITA Indoor Championship is scheduled for November 2-5 and will be held on the campus of Ohio State University.
