Lady Gators Drop Round One, Lead Second Round at Hooters Match Play
Saturday, November 4, 2006 | Women's Golf
The No. 20 University of Florida women's golf team wrapped up the first day of the Hooters Match Play Collegiate Championship in Orlando, Fla., with a 2-1 second-round lead over Southeastern Conference opponent South Carolina before Friday's play was suspended due to darkness. Earlier in the day, the Lady Gators dropped a 5-0 decision to seventh-seeded Florida State.
“We were all disappointed with our play in the first round, but in golf, you have to learn to put disappointments behind you, and we did that today,” said head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “The team has been fighting hard in the second round, and they've begun to realize that the two competitors on the course are the course and themselves.”
The Orange and Blue moved into the consolation bracket of the Match Play after falling 5-0 in the morning round to in-state rival Florida State. Redshirt sophomore Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) fell to Caroline Westrup, 4 and 3, while junior Eleanor Tucker (Wilson, N.C.) and sophomore Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) both fell 3 and 1 to Whitney Brummett and Whitney Wright, respectively.
Junior Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) dropped a tough match on the par-73, 7,198-yard Eagle Creek Golf Club to the Seminoles' Jaclyn Burch, and Kayla Shaul took a 1-up decision over junior captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.).
In a match yet to be determined, No. 10 Florida leads No. 15 South Carolina, 2-1, with two matches to be completed at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Gal and Myers claimed the two Florida victories, with Gal defeating Laura Raffo, 5 and 3, and Myers topping Taylor Barrett, 4 and 2. Chudy was defeated 4 and 3 by Bendicte Toumpsin.
“The pressure on our remaining golfers in this round is a tremendous learning experience for them. You can't teach the kind of pressure they will be under tomorrow morning, but it will certainly pay off in the long run when its time for post-season play,” said Briles-Hinton.
Saturday's third round is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., following the conclusion of the Florida-South Carolina contest. Live results will be available online at www.golfstat.com and www.GatorZone.com.
