Gator Men?s Tennis Defeats South Florida, 6-1

The top-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team matched its best start under fifth-year head coach Andy Jackson as the Gators defeated USF, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in Gainesville to move to 5-0 on the season. The match served as the season opener for the Bulls.
UF also started 5-0 in 2004 before dropping its first match of the year against then-No. 6 UCLA (4-2) in the quarterfinals of the ITA Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash.
UF opened the afternoon by taking the doubles point for the fourth time on the season. Sophomore Greg Ouellette and junior Janne Holmia teamed on the top court to defeat USF”s Federico Barton and Dirk Britzen, 8-2, in 38 minutes. Chris Brandi and Ryan Sherry provided the clincher with an 8-5 showing against Juan Barragan and Mark Gattiker at the bottom of the order.
UF's Vladimir Obradovic put UF on top 2-0 with a straight set 6-1, 6-3 victory over Barragan on court two. The win was his second consecutive in straight sets.
Brandi got UF to within one of the match when he took out USF's Dillon Brozyna on court five 6-1, 6-3. Brandi's victory was his fifth of the dual match season, which leads all Gators.
Sherry provided the winner on court six with a 6-0, 7-6 (2) score against Gattiker. Dating back to last season, Sherry has won 11 straight dual matches on the court and 22 of the last 23.
UF's 70th-ranked Stefan Tell added to the scoring when he defeated Marc Jager on court four, 6-4, 7-5. After dropping his last two singles matches, Holmia got back on track by recording a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory on court three over Barton.
Florida stays at home and returns to the courts Saturday, Feb. 11, as the Gators host No. 22 Florida State at 1 p.m.
