The seventh-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team won its eighth consecutive match with a 6-1 victory over Alabama at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility on Friday evening.
The Gators, who improved to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in Southeastern Conference matches to remain perfect in league matches, snapped Alabama's five match home winning streak, as the Tide fell to 7-8, 3-4 in league action, but still lead the SEC Western Division.
Florida also extended its record in the series to a decisive 31-0 all-time against Alabama, including a 13-0 mark in Tuscaloosa.
The Gators opened the match for the 13th time winning the doubles point, however, were denied the sweep as Florida won at the No. 2 and No. 3 position, but lost at the No. 1 slot.
Junior Nina Suvak won her ninth consecutive singles match by defeating Natalie McElveen 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 4 to give the Gators a 2-0 lead in the team scoring.
UF's lone loss came at the No. 1 singles position, where Diana Srebrovic lost 6-2, 7-5 to Robin Stephenson, who collected her 89th career victory and became Alabama's all-time winningest singles player, as the Tide closed to within 2-1 and avoided the shutout.
Sophomore Whitney Benik moved to 7-0 in SEC dual match action with her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mari Muller on court No. 3 and placed Florida within one victory of the dual match win.
Alexis Gordon quelled any chance of a Crimson Tide rally, as she downed Ashley Bentley 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot to clinch the Florida victory. Gordon moved to 13-1 in dual match singles action, earning her third straight win over a nationally ranked opponent.
The match, which was forced indoors onto four courts because of rain, continued with freshman Keri Robison collecting her second collegiate singles victory, netting a decisive 6-1, 6-0 decision against Sofia Ayala on court No. 6.
Sophomore Alex Liles capped the dual match with her 0-6, 7-6, 1-0 super-tiebreak victory over Shelley Godwin at the No. 6 position.
The Gators return to action on Sunday, traveling to Auburn to face the Tigers beginning at 2 p.m.
