Myers? Performance Lifts Lady Gators During Day Two of SEC Championships

The University of Florida women's golf team improved its standing in the second round of the Southeastern Conference Championships Saturday, moving up three spots to sit in fifth place at the par 72, 6,217 yard Legends Club of Tennessee. Sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) led the Lady Gators during day two, shooting a two-under 70.
Myers moved up to a tie for seventh place with her performance, to own a 147 two-round total for the tourney. Redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) carded a 73 to sit in a tie for 17th (76-73=149). Jouven's score in the second round was her lowest of the spring as a scoring member of the Orange and Blue squad, which head coach Jill Briles-Hinton feels might be a turning point for her.
“Ornella had a great round today, her lowest as a scoring member of the team,” said Briles-Hinton. “This may be a pivotal point for her in the season. Whitney shot the low score we need to have in every round, and hit the ball really well today. I think all of the girls came into the second round with a more positive outlook than yesterday, they were focused and ready to play.”
Freshman Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) claimed a tie for 26th after shooting a 74 in the second round (77-74=151). Sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) fired a 74 on day two to finish in a tie for 34th (79-74=153) heading into the final day. Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) rounded out the squad with a 76 (78-76=154) to claim 39th. After naming round two “moving day” following the team's day one performance, Briles-Hinton was pleased with the Lady Gator's progress on Saturday.
“We shot well today and moved up, but everyone else moved up too,” said Briles-Hinton. “We're going to have to continue to improve tomorrow, and leave everything out on the golf course. I'm proud of the effort I saw on the course today, this is a talented team with great golf swings and good fundamentals. We just need to put it all together for one more round.”
In the team standings Florida carded a 291(308-291=599) in the second round and moved up to fifth place with the effort. Auburn recorded a 282 on day two to finish at minus-six as a team and retain its top placement from day one. The Tigers' Marina Martinez shot one of the two low scores on the day with a 68 (73-68=141) to lead the medalist race.
Action continues at the Legends Club of Tennessee with tee-times starting at 8:30 a.m., Sunday morning. A full round recap and results will be available following day three competition at www.gatorzone.com, while up-to-the-minute action can be seen via live scoring at www.golfstat.com.
