The University of Florida women's track and field coaching staff announced the signing of Anguillian standout Shara Proctor on Monday. Proctor, a native of The Valley, Anguilla, is the national record-holder in the long jump as well as a national junior champion in the event.
Proctor competed in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in March and won the gold medal with a mark of 6.06m/19-10.75 in the long jump. Her personal-record leap of 6.24m/20-5.75, set at the 2005 Carifta Games, is the national record for Anguilla. In 2006, she returned to the Carifta Games in the French West Indies town of Guadeloupe and took home the gold medal with a mark of 6.17m/20-3.
“We are very excited to sign Shara,” UF women's head coach Tom Jones said. “She is a real talent, and I am proud of the way (Associate Head Coach) Steve Lemke has recruited her since we first saw her at the PanAm Junior Games last summer in Canada. Shara is an athlete we feel has all the tools to come in and contribute immediately on the Southeastern Conference and NCAA levels.”
Proctor will enroll in classes starting in August after finishing her high school studies at Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School in her hometown of The Valley, Anguilla. She is the daughter of Orris and Wilma Proctor.
