The University of Florida Women's Golf team advanced to the NCAA Championship on Saturday by finishing fourth at the NCAA Central Regional. The Lady Gators carded team scores of 301-312-297 = 910 (+46) during the three day tournament at the Traditions Golf Club.
Sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) rose to the challenge of leading the Lady Gators on the last day of competition. Gal, who has the best stroke average on the squad, fired a team-best 71 (-1) for her sixth round at par-or-under this season. Gal made five birdies, including three on the back-nine, to finish the tournament tied for 15th-place.
Head coach Jill Briles-Hinton preached all week-long about being patient against a difficult golf course and the waiting finally paid off for sophomore Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.). Chudy saved par on nine-consecutive holes to start her day and finished with a one-over score of 73.
“This was a very difficult golf course to play on and I'm pleased with the way our team hung in there,” Briles-Hinton said. “This is the type of course that will prepare us well for Columbus, because they are similar styles.”
Redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) remained consistent during the final round and carded a 78 (+6) to finish the tournament tied for 26th-place. Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) fired her best round of the tournament, a 78 (+6) to finish tied for 76th. Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) also had a strong finish, carding 75 (+3) during her final round to earn a share of 13th-place, which was the highest placing for the Gators.
The Gators will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the May 23-26 NCAA Championships. Other teams advancing from the Central Regional include Southern California, Duke, Pepperdine, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M , Kent State and Nebraska.
