Three current University of Florida swimmers combined to earn 11 medals at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, including four gold-medal performances.
Rising sophomore Bradley Ally (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led the way, earning three of the four gold medals. The six-time All-American, who was representing Barbados, placed first in the 200-meter breast and the 200 and 400-meter individual medley. He rounded out his meet with a second-place effort in the 100-meter breast.
Incoming freshmen Shaune Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands) and Omar Pinzon (Bogota, Colombia) also represented their home countries at the Games with medal-winning performances. Fraser captured the gold medal in the 200-meter free, as well as the silver in both the 100-meter free and 200-meter IM. Pinzon collected runner-up honors in the 50, 100 and 200-meter back. He also helped his country's 800-meter FR team to a third-place finish.
Former Florida swimmer Ricardo Monasterio also won medals at the games, taking home the gold medal in the 1,500-meter free. Competing for his native Venezuela, Monasterio also earned silver medals in the 400 and 800-meter free, in addition to a silver as part of the 800-meter FR squad. Monasterio's four honors ran the medal count for swimmers with UF ties to 15 for the competition.
“This is a premier meet for our guys from Latin American and Caribbean countries,” Florida head coach Gregg Troy said. “They get terrific international experience and they get to swim against a lot of other college swimmers. It's also great exposure for the University of Florida.”
