Horschel Posts Second-Round Victory At Rainy U.S. Amateur
Thursday, August 24, 2006 | Men's Golf
Despite a rain delay of more than three hours on Thursday morning, University of Florida rising sophomore Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) earned a 3 and 1 victory over David Merkow in the second round of the 106th U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
The 2006 PING first-team All-American jumped out a 1-up lead with a par on the first hole of the day, and would make the turn at 2 up. He increased his lead to as large as 4 up on the back nine, before falling to 2 up after the 15th. Horschel sealed the deal on the par-three 17th with a birdie to walk away with the 3 and 1 win.
Horschel was two-under when the match concluded after 17 holes at Hazeltine, never trailing in the match. He collected birdies on the second, 11th and 17th holes and played bogey-free golf for the first 13 holes of the day.
Although the third round of match play is scheduled for Thursday, the morning's weather delay may force those contests to be postponed. Horschel is slated to face Canadian Ryan Yip, who advanced after a 6 and 5 win over Kevin Tway in the second round.
