W-Tennis Wins Five of Six Singles vs. Duke at Gator Fall Classic
Saturday, September 16, 2006 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team won five of six singles matches against Duke to highlight its season-opening competition during the first day of play at the Gator Fall Classic.
The Gators weren't as fortunate on the doubles court versus Miami, where the Hurricanes captured two of the three contests.
Action continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex, where Florida will play doubles against Duke, followed by singles action versus South Florida.
Earning singles victories Friday afternoon for the Gators included returners Alex Liles, Nina Suvak and Lolita Frangulyan, in addition to freshmen Megan Alexander and Csilla Borsanyi.
“Overall, I thought we played well against some very good competition,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “I was really pleased with the play of our freshmen, Megan and Csilla. They both faced tough players. It was good to finally see them play a real match outside of practice. They both looked really good in practice, but I thought they looked even better today and that's pretty exciting.”
Borsanyi began her collegiate career with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Amanda Granson.
“In the beginning, I was so nervous because I wanted to play my best,” Borsanyi shared. “Things seemed to get better once I won the tiebreaker in the first set. I was able to relax a little.”
Alexander debuted with a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) super-tiebreak victory against Liz Plotkin.
Juniors Alex Liles and Lolita Frangulyan posted impressive wins in their respective season-opening matches, as Liles topped Jenny Zika, 6-1, 6-0, while Frangulyan downed 76th-ranked Clelia Deltour, 6-0, 6-3. Senior Nina Suvak claimed the first set 7-6 and held to begin the second before Tory Zawacki was forced to retire with an injury.
“Alex Liles looked really good today,” Thornqvist said. “She's been playing very well in practice. This is her first year since she's been here that she has started the year healthy and it shows. She looked very solid today.”
