UF Men's Tennis Begins Play At Southern Intercollegiate

Several members of the University of Florida men's tennis team were in action Friday as the fall season got underway at the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Championship in Athens, Ga.
In the Division I singles draw, junior Nestor Briceno (No. 45) opened with a 6-0 , 6-4 victory over UNC-Charlotte's Darren Mansell. With the win, Briceno moved on to the Round of 32 where he will face Louisville's Damar Johnson
Two UF newcomers came away with wins in the Division III singles draw as Geoffrey Barton and Billy Mulligan took their matches in straight sets as did redshirt sophomore Shaun Young. Barton defeated Timothy Mittiga (UTC), 6-4, 7-5, while Mulligan took out Furman's Andy Sobczyk (6-2, 6-4). On Saturday Barton faces Samford's Sam Huffman and Mulligan takes on Scott Lieberman of Vanderbilt. Young got his victory against Birmingham Southern's Richard Walsh (6-2, 6-4). Young advanced to take on Charleston Southern's Chris Peek.
