Monday, October 22, 2007 | Women's Tennis
Both Gator doubles teams competing in the ITA South Regional Women's Tennis Championships advanced to the quarterfinals on Sunday after each collected a pair of victories at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Florida's third-seeded tandem of Whitney Benik and Diana Srebrovic opened with an 8-5 victory over Georgia's Ellis Cameron and Kelley Hyndman before they toppled South Florida's Liz Cruz and Iciri Rai, 8-4. They will face Georgia Tech's seeded team of Kirsten Flower and Maya Johansson in the quarterfinal round on Monday afternoon.
Megan Alexander and Lolita Frangulyan joined their Gator teammates in the quarterfinals after beginning the 32-team draw with an 8-1 win over Alabama's Andrea Brenes and Bianca Svensson, before downing Florida State's Carolin Walter and Tapiwa Marobela, 8-5. Alexander & Frangulyan play FIU's Egle Petrauskaite and Liset Brito on Monday for a chance to advance.
The doubles winner earns a berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships, held in Columbus, Ohio, next month.
The Gators weren't as fortunate on the singles court, where Benik, Srebrovic and Anastasia Revzina lost their respective round of 16 matches in the Flight A main draw. Benik lost to Florida State's Katie Rybakova, 6-3, 6-1, Srebrovic fell to Georgia Tech's Christy Striplin 6-4, 6-3 and Revzina withdrew from her match due to injury.
Alexander and Frangulyan also took to the singles court on Sunday when each logged wins in their consolation A singles draw round of 32 matches. Alexander topped KSU's Madeleine Hakansson, 6-1, 6-4, while Frangulyan downed FAMU's Rachel Pye, 6-2, 6-2. Both Gators return to the court at 8 a.m. on Monday for round of 16 competition.
