SEC Names All-Conference Teams, Nead Voted League's Male Scholar-Athlete
Wednesday, February 14, 2007 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The Southeastern Conference announced the 2007 SEC Swimming and Diving Scholar Athletes and First and Second Team All-SEC honorees Wednesday afternoon, as voted on by the league head coaches. Florida senior swimmer Kevin Nead (Ithaca, N.Y.) was named the conference's Male Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the Florida swimming and diving program placed eight men and three women on All-SEC teams.
In addition to earning Florida's third SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, Nead has been chosen, based on exceptional academic achievement and research potential, to study in Strasbourg, France, for eight months beginning in May 2007 and continuing until just prior to the spring 2008 semester. He has also been selected to present and publish his research by members of the UF faculty. In the 2006 NCAA Championships, Nead earned an All-America honor in the 400 IM after finishing 12th with a career-best time of 3:49.68. In 2004, he was the top-ranked USS Scholastic All-American, and was a member of the 2003 National Junior Team. Nead is a Zoology/Pre-Med major and has a 3.99 GPA.
Earning First-Team All-SEC recognition from the conference office were juniors Grant Johnson (Clearwater, Fla.) and Caroline Burckle (Louisville, Ky.), sophomores Bradley Ally (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Lucas Salatta (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and freshmen Shaune Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands) and Roland Rudolf (Budapest, Hungary). Senior Ashley Carusone (High Springs, Fla.), juniors Tim Hughes (Winter Park, Fla.), Daniel Penniman (Pensacola, Fla.) and Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.), and freshman Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England) were each tabbed Second Team All-SEC honorees.
