Friday, March 23, 2007 | Women's Tennis
The second-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team took the court for the first time in 12 days, but showed little effects of the time off during its convincing 6-1 victory over Arkansas Friday afternoon at the UA Varsity Courts.
The Gators (12-1, 3-1 SEC), who were playing for the first time since their 4-3 loss to current No. 1-Georgia on March 11, swept all three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles contests en route to getting back in the win column.
Senior Nina Suvak paired with junior Whitney Benik to provide the clinching doubles point at the No. 1 position before she took action at a career-high No. 2 spot in the singles lineup and provided a 6-2, 6-4 victory to net her 12th consecutive win. Benik also collected a singles victory, earning a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the No. 5 spot that gave Florida a 2-0 lead in the dual match.
Lolita Frangulyan then topped Melissa Hoffmeister 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 6 to place the Gators within one win of the team victory. The Lady Razorbacks (7-7, 0-5 SEC) avoided the shutout as Nanar Airapetian handled freshman Csilla Borsanyi, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 position.
Freshman Anastasia Revzina prevented any chance of an Arkansas comeback as the dealt Audrey Bordeleau a 6-2, 6-4 setback to clinch the victory for the Gators. Diana Srebrovic snapped a personal two-match losing streak by closing the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over 25th-ranked Ela Kaluder at the No. 1 court.
Florida concludes its four-match road trip on Sunday, when the team plays LSU in Baton Rouge beginning at 1 p.m.
