Women's Golf Remains In Third after Two Rounds of Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic
Saturday, March 24, 2007 | Women's Golf
The eighth-ranked Lady Gators golf team remains in third place after completing the second round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at University Golf Course on Saturday. Florida shot a team round of 298 as junior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) fired the low round of the day for the Gators with a one-over total of 72, and junior Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) leads the team in the individual standings in eighth place.
“We played two strokes better, but we still left a lot out there,” Florida head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “They've redone the golf course and the greens have a lot of slopes in them and they are very hard right now. You can hit the ball to the front of the green and it can end up on the back leaving you with a very difficult put to make with the slopes in the green, so you just have to take what the course gives you.”
The Lady Gators compiled a second-round team total of 298, two strokes better than their first-round of 300, to remain in third place. UF's 36-hole score stands at 598 (+30) and is just six strokes behind the tournament leading and fourth-ranked Auburn Tigers, who's two-round total is 592 (+24). Arkansas slide into second place at 597 (+29), just one stroke ahead of the Lady Gators, while 20th-ranked Wake Forest and 18th-ranked Virginia stand just one stroke behind UF on a crowded leader board at 599 (+31).
“If we can be conservative, take what the course gives us and not let frustration come into play, we have a chance of pulling a win out at this tournament,” Briles-Hinton said. “We have to play well because we are all bunched up together.”
Chudy shot four strokes better in the second-round with the one-over 72 as her 36-hole total of 148 (+6) moved her up 21 spots into a tie for 12th in the individual standings. Chudy made the turn at one-under after firing three birdies to just two bogeys. Her birdies came on the par-4, 385-yard fourth, the par-4, 356-yard sixth and the par-5, 484-yard seventh.
Gal climbed four spots to eighth-place with a second-round, two-over 73 that brought her 36-hole total to 147 (+5). Gal was even through the front nine scoring three birdies and three bogeys. After bogeying three holes on the back nine, Gal finished her round strong with a birdie on the par-5, 488 yard 18th hole.
Gal and Chudy are respectively four and five strokes off of the individual lead of 143 (+1) held by Louisiana State's Melissa Eaton.
Redshirt sophomore Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) carded a 75 for the second-straight day and is a tie for 22nd at 150 (+8). Sophomore Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) is tied for 40th at 153 (+11) while junior Whiney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) is tied for 65th at 159 (+17).
Play continues on Sunday with the third and final round of action set to tee-off at 9 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.Golfstat.com and through www.GatorZone.com.
