Gators Rack Up 8 Victories, Six NCAA Marks On Final Day of 63rd Annual Pepsi Florida Relays

The University of Florida men's track and field team collected eight victories and six NCAA regional qualifying marks to conclude competition at the 63rd annual Pepsi Florida Relays on Saturday at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
The 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, junior Jose Garcia (Miami, Fla.), junior Wes Stockbarger (Port Charlotte, Fla.), sophomore Jeremy Criscione (Interlachen, Fla.), sophomore Justin Semeyn (Tampa, Fla.), freshman Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.) led the group of Gators who performed well at the meet on the final day.
“I'm very pleased – we had a great day today,” Florida men's coach Mike Holloway said. “The biggest thing today was that we competed hard. We came out flat yesterday, but we solved that issue today. This time of year it's not about winning and losing, it's about preparation. If we can focus on that then good things are going to happen with this team.”
Stockbarger posted the sixth-best throw in the nation and sixth best in school history in the shot put (18.34m/60-2), Garcia notched the first NCAA regional time of his career in the steeplechase (8:59.87), Smith was the top collegian in the 200m with a PR (21.07), Semeyn recorded the first regional mark of his career to win the pole vault (5.05m/16-6.75) and Criscione won the 5,000m in 14:35.40.
UF's 4x100m competed without senior Mike Morrison (Willingboro, N.J.), but still managed to win the event in 39.93 with a lineup of sophomore Dennis Martin (Anderson, S.C.), freshman Jeremy Hall (Jacksonville, Fla.), sophomore Willie Perry (Lenoir, N.C.) and sophomore Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.).
Florida's 4x400m relay of freshman Carlos Phillips (Winter Park, Fla.), Smith, sophomore Afolabi Aromire (Springdale, Md.) and junior Eric Alberter (Benton, Ill.) capped the evening with a victory and an NCAA regional mark of 3:09.77.
In addition, the Gators claimed the shuttle hurdle relay title as the foursome of Martin, sophomore Kallinka Pitt (Largo, Fla.), junior Joe Taylor (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and freshman Mike Morrison (Chesapeake, Va.) crossed the finish line in 58.60.
Stockbarger was the top collegiate finisher in the shot put with a mark of 18.34m/60-2, which he achieved on his third attempt to momentarily take the lead before former Florida State All-American Dorian Scott won the event on his next throw (20.60m/67-7). Stockbarger's toss with the sixth-best in school history and the sixth-best in the nation in 2007.
Smith finished No. 1 among collegians in the 200m as he won his heat with a career-best outdoor time of 21.07. In crossing the finish line in 21.07, Smith shaved 0.09 off his previous fastest mark of 21.16.
Semeyn beat his previous outdoor best by four inches in recording the first NCAA regional mark of his career to win the pole vault with a clearance of 5.05m/16-6.75. The mark ties him for third in the Southeastern Conference.
Garcia shattered his previous PR to notch the first victory of his career in the 3,000m steeplechase. Garcia clocked a regional time of 8:59.87 – nearly 14 seconds faster than his previous top time. Junior Ryder Leary (Yulee, Fla.) took second in 9:11.33 to set a personal best by nearly 10 seconds.
Criscione easly captured first in the 5,000m after crossing the line in 14:35.40 to claim the first victory of his career. Justin Taylor was next for the Gators with a runner-up finish in 14:47.20 in the first 5k race of his career.
The 4x100m led a strong showing by UF relay squads. The Gators clocked an NCAA regional time of 39.93 to edge out the Tallahassee All-Stars by 0.01 for the relay crown. UF was in second after the first exchange, but a stellar second leg from Hall put the Gators into contention before Smith finished strong to propel Florida to the win.
The shuttle hurdle relay of Martin, Pitt, Taylor and Morrison started the day well for the Gators as the foursome claimed the victory in the event with a time of 58.60 – nearly two seconds faster than the runners-up, Coastal Carolina.
Sophomore Eugene Martin (Gainesville, Fla.) picked up another victory for the Gators in the B section of the high jump. Martin set an outdoor personal best earn the first win of his career by clearing 2.03m/6-8 – two inches better than the runner up.
Junior Blake Taylor (Lansdale, Pa.) added a runner-up finish for the Gators in the B section of the triple jump with a leap of 14.24m/46-8.75.
The men's team will split up to compete at several meets next week including the Mt. SAC Relays (April 13-15), the Azusa Pacific Invitational (April 13) and the Miami Elite Invitational (April 14).
