Monday, April 9, 2007 | Women's Tennis
The fourth-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team is hitting its stride on the doubles court down the stretch and for the second straight match it proved to be the difference as the Gators defeated Kentucky 4-3 on Sunday at the Boone Tennis Center's indoor courts.
The win marked the final regular-season road match for Florida (17-1, 8-1 SEC), which returns to the Ring Tennis Complex for its final two home matches of the year. On Wednesday, the Gators play host to Ole Miss beginning at 10 a.m. in a match that is being made-up from an earlier postponed date against the Lady Rebels. Florida then closes out its regular-season home slate on Saturday, hosting South Carolina at 10 a.m.
“I'm really excited about our doubles teams right now,” Florida head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Winning the doubles point gives us so much more confidence on the singles court. We have such great depth in our singles lineup and it came through again in today's win.”
Florida's rookie doubles team of Megan Alexander and Anastasia Revzina got things rolling with an 8-3 victory on court No. 3 before the Gator pair of Csilla Borsanyi and Diana Srebrovic captured the doubles point with an 8-3 upset over 11th-ranked Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk. That win marked Borsanyi and Srebrovic's third consecutive win over a top-20 tandem, as they improved to 5-0 playing together. Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak capped the doubles play with a hard-fought 9-8 (9-7) win to help the Gators sweep the doubles competition.
Revzina gave the Gators a 2-0 lead after defeating Carolina Escamilla 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 position and netting her 12th consecutive singles victory. Kentucky got on the board after Nina Suvak fell to Sarah Woestmann 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.
Florida junior Diana Srebrovic, one of the nation's top indoor players, then produced a 7-5, 6-1 victory on court No. 1, as the Gators came within one win of the dual match victory. The Wildcats collected another singles win before freshman Csilla Borsanyi earned a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Jessica Giuggioli at the No. 5 position to secure the win.
