Women's Golf In 13th After Round One Of West Regional

The eighth-ranked University of Florida women's golf team posted a team total of 309 (+25) in round one of the 2007 NCAA West Regional on Thursday at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. UF's score is good for 13th place after 18 holes of play, just 10 strokes behind eighth-place Denver. The top eight teams at each regional location advance to the NCAA Championships.
“Things obviously didn't go our way today, but we're not a team that gets down on ourselves,” Florida head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “We played great golf today except for the last three holes, so there are some positives we can focus on. We have a lot of work to do tomorrow and Saturday, and we're not going back down from it.”
Redshirt sophomore Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) paced the Lady Gators on Thursday, matching her season-best round with a one-over 72. She recorded two birdies in a three-hole stretch on the front nine, making the turn at even par. She made three-straight pars to open the back nine before bogeying the par-four 13th, but rebounded with five pars in a row to close the round at one over. The effort was Jouven's fourth round of 72 on the year, and her second in a row, as she carded the total in the final round of the SEC Championship.
“Ornella isn't feeling the greatest, but she was terrific today,” Briles-Hinton said. “She's been playing well lately and working hard on her game, and she deserves the good round she had today. She really stepped up at a key time today to give us a boost when we needed it.”
Sophomore Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) continued her run of solid postseason play with a three-over 74 in the first round of the West Regional. She charged into the turn at one under courtesy of birdies on the second and eighth holes, but a pair of bogeys and a double on the back nine left her in black numbers for the day.
Junior Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) rolled in four birdies on the afternoon, but ran into trouble on her last three holes and headed to the clubhouse with a six-over 77. Juniors Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) and Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) shot identical scores of 86 in the first round.
“The players aren't down on themselves in the least, but they're mad about how the round ended,” Briles-Hinton said. “Most of all, they are anxious to get back on the course. We've had two cracks at this course now with yesterday's practice round, and we'll find a way to adjust.”
Stanford shot a three-over 287 to claim the first-round lead at the West Regional, while Oklahoma State's Pernilla Lindberg fired a first-round 68 (-3) to sit atop the individual leader board. Play will resume at 10 a.m. EST on Saturday. Scoring will be done live on the Internet at www.golfstat.com, and can also be accessed at www.gatorzone.com.
