W-Tennis: Boonstra Highlights Opening Day at Riviera/ITA All-American (updated)

University of Florida sophomore Marrit Boonstra (pronounced MARE-it) provided one of the biggest first-round upsets during the opening day of play at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, held on Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Boonstra, ranked No. 67 in the country, out-dueled Southern California's 38th-ranked Gabriela Niculescu, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in a match that lasted more than three and a half hours. For Boonstra, the win was the highest-ranked opponent she has defeated during her young collegiate career.
After a break to rest from that three-set thriller, Boonstra again took the court, where she and Virginia's 68th-ranked Jennifer Stevens battled for another three-plus hours before the Gator sophomore emerged with the hard-fought, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, win.
Boonstra needs to come up with one more victory to secure one of eight open spots in the 32-player main draw of the national event which begins on October 2nd. Her third-round opponent is Furman's 72nd-ranked Laura Gioia and the two are set to take the court on Wednesday at approximately 6:45 p.m. ET.
UF's Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) and Anastasia Revzina (Russia) also were in action on Tuesday.
Alexander opened her singles day with an impressive 6-2, 6-0 victory against Oklahoma's Ana-Maria Constantinescu. She wasn't as fortunate in the round of 32, where the 70th-ranked Gator fell to Georgia's 33rd-ranked Yvette Hyndman, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Alexander resumes play in the main draw of the doubles event, where she and Boonstra received an automatic berth.
Revzina, ranked No. 66, dropped her first-round match, 6-0, 6-4, to Tennessee's Caitlin Whorisky, who is ranked No. 37 nationally. Revzina rebounded in the opening round of consolation action, where she defeated Pepperdine's Animika Bhargave, 6-1, 6-4. She faces California's Bojana Bobusic in the round of 16 on Wednesday at approximately 4:30 p.m. ET.
