Women's Golf Finish in Fifth at The Landfall Tradition
Sunday, October 26, 2008 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team remained in fifth place after scoring a tournament-low 303 (307-309-303=919) in the third and final round of The Landfall Tradition Sunday in Wilmington, N.C. The squad now owns two top-10 tournament finishes and Sunday marked the first top-five finish of the season.
“Today was a much better day for the Lady Gators,” said UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “Progress was made and this team will continue to improve. I think that it's important to remember and understand that this is an extremely young team.”
“I believe that the ladies learned a little bit about playing smart golf today,” Briles-Hinton continued. “The scores did not reflect how much better we played today as compared to the first two days of this tournament.”
Sophomore Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) took her turn to help lead the Gators in Wilmington with a 73 (+1) on Sunday for a 54-hole total of 227 (+11, 78-76-73) to finish in a tie for 10th place. Yadloczky played consistently all weekend but saved her best for last, making birdies on the ninth and 12th holes and collecting 13 pars. The finish is her first top-10 finish of the season and the seventh of her career.
Freshman Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) was impressive at the par-72, 6,064-yard Jack Nicklaus Course, as she joined Yadloczky in a tie for 10th place with a 227 (+11, 74-77-76). Along with teammate Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.), Watts led the Lady Gators in the first two rounds. She set career highs in tournament score, low round (first round – 74) and best finish. Prior to The Landfall Tradition, Watts' best finish at a tournament was a tie for 60th.
“Andrea came into this tournament struggling and we worked with her on getting rid of those freshman jitters,” said Briles-Hinton. “I am very proud of her performance this weekend. It appears that all of the work she has been putting in is paying off. However, she, along with everyone on the team, needs to continue to work hard to reach their potential.”
Jensen had her best finish of the season after she tied for 15th at The Landfall. She collected six birdies in the tournament, including two in the final round where she carded a 79 (+7) for a tournament total of 230 (+14, 74-77-79). The freshman leads the team with 24 birdies through nine rounds of play.
Sophomore Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) cut eight strokes off of her first round score and four off her second to finish Sunday's play with a 75 (+3) and a tournament total of 237 (+21, 83-79-75) to tie for 36th.
“Hannah made a lot of progress,” Briles-Hinton noted. “Although she has been playing golf her entire life, I think she learned a lot about herself this weekend.”
Redshirt junior Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) finished with a final score of 247 (+31) as she matched her second round score of 83 on Sunday. Nelson finished in 54th place.
Wake Forest claimed the team prize by an overwhelming 28-stroke margin with a total score of 880 (+16, 297-288-295). The Demon Deacons' Dolores White took home the individual title after carding a two-under par 70 on Sunday for a 54-hole score of 218 (+2, 75-73-70).
The Lady Gators will conclude fall action Nov. 2-4 as they head to Orlando for Hooters Match Play.
