W-Tennis: Doubles Team Ends Riviera Run in Quarterfinal Round
Friday, October 3, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis doubles team of Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) and Marrit Boonstra (Netherlands) ended its run in the quarterfinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships played at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Alexander and Boonstra seemed to be on-pace to pull the big upset over duke's third-ranked pair of Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson, holding a 5-3 lead in the eight-game pro-set, with a couple of game-points to take a 6-3 advantage. The Gator tandem, however, couldn't overtake the Blue Devil duo and lost, 8-6.
"We certainly had our chances today," UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. "Once we didn't capitalize on those opportunities to take a 6-3 lead, we became passive. That's a great Duke doubles team, one of the best in the country, and they were the more aggressive team today. Clearly, there are a lot of things we can work on from what we saw today and during this tournament and we will get back to work as soon as we return to Gainesville."
