Men's Tennis: Four Players Advance at D'Novo Men's All-American Pre-Qualifying Event

Four members of the University of Florida men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the D'Novo Men's All-American Pre-Qualifying Event held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday.
All four Gators received byes in the first round and will begin play on Saturday. Sophomore Tyler Hochwalt (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who is seeded first at the event, will face Denver's Benny Althaus at 8 a.m. CT. Also scheduled to play at 8 a.m., junior Daniel Cash (Oslo, Norway) will play Rook Schellenberg (Texas) for a chance to move into the third round. Sophomore Johnny Hamui (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) will take on Jim Bouleau of New Mexico State at 10:30 a.m. CT. The final Gator competing in Tulsa this weekend, freshman Joey Burkhardt (St. Augustine, Fla.) will face Denver's Martin Zimmermann at 8 a.m. CT.
Sophomore Erik Corace (Naples, Fla.) was the only Gator to see action on Friday and was defeated by Jason Smith of Sacramento State, 6-4, 6-2.
The D'Novo All-American Tennis Championships entails five days of qualifying events beginning with a 256-player pre-qualifying singles tournament, which takes place on Oct. 3-5. The pre-qualifying feeds into 128-player and 64-doubles team qualifying tournaments on Oct. 6-8, which then feeds into the 64-player, 32-doubles team main draws on Oct. 9-12.
Gators Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) and Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, Fla.) will participate in the qualifying event for the D'Novo Men's All-American Championships on Oct. 6-8.
The ITA All-America Championships are the first of three national championship events during the 2008-09 collegiate tennis season. The other two are the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
