Men's Tennis Ends Prequalifying at ITA-American

Three members of the University of Florida men's tennis team advanced to the qualifying round of D'Novo Men's ITA All-American Championships as the prequalifying rounds came to a close Sunday.
Sophomore Tyler Hochwalt (Scottsdale, Ariz.) defeated Texas A&M's Kayvon Karimi in the fourth round, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Joey Burkhardt (St. Augustine) also posted a straight-set win to move on as he defeated North Carolina State's Derek Stephens (6-1, 6-3). Despite dropping his match 6-1, 6-4 to Eliot Potvin (Ga. Tech), junior Dan Cash (Oslo, Norway) was selected to move on to the qualifying draw.
Gators Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) and Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, Fla.) will participate in the qualifying event as well, which runs Oct. 6-8.
The D'Novo All-American Tennis Championships entails five days of qualifying events beginning with a 256-player pre-qualifying singles tournament, which took place Oct. 3-5. The pre-qualifying fed into a 128-player and 64-doubles team qualifying tournaments on Oct. 6-8, which then feeds into the 64-player, 32-doubles team main draws on Oct. 9-12.
The ITA All-America Championships are the first of three national championship events during the 2008-09 collegiate tennis season. The other two are the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
