WTennis: Boonstra Nearly Nets Upset at Indoors, Mather 2-0 at SEC Classic

Members of the University of Florida women's tennis team were competing in two different events on Friday, with sophomore Marrit Boonstra (Netherlands) almost earning the biggest win of her young career and freshman Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) coming through with her second singles victory.
Mather captured an opening round 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over LSU's Nicole Kantor in the SEC Fall Coaches Classic held in Tuscaloosa, Ala., before downing Vanderbilt's Courtney Ulery, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round of the Gold Draw.
In her round of 16 singles match at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va., Boonstra stormed out to take the first set 6-1 and held a 3-0 lead in the second over fourth-seeded and sixth-ranked Maria Mosolova of Northwestern. The Wildcat, however, stormed back and forced a deciding third, which was even at 5-all, before Mosolova won the final two games to take the win, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. The run ends Boonstra's debut in a main draw of one of the three national singles event.
Mather also paired with fellow freshman Barbara Pinterova (Solvakia) on the doubles court, but the Gator duo dropped an 8-5 decision to MSU's Oleysia Tsigvintseva and Natalia Mayuk in the first round of the Crimson Draw. Pinterova also dropped both of her singles matches during her debut collegiate event, falling to Georgia's Cameron Ellis, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2, and to Ole Miss' Gabriela Rangel, 6-2, 7-5.
Mather and Pinterova continue play in the SEC Fall Coaches Classic on Saturday, when one round of singles and two rounds of doubles are scheduled to be held.
