Gal placed in a tie for 51st in the LPGA season-opening SBS Open at Turtle Bay just three days ago, earning $3,215. While priming for the SBS Open, she was able to get a practice round in at the Ko Olina Resort a few weeks before and will get an additional one underway today.
“I'm looking forward to this tournament,” Gal said. “The first one was a great experience. I've been working on my wedges, hitting different shots and trying to get the ball to land soft. I think the greens are a little softer and that's something I definitely want to improve on this week.”
A two-time defending title winner at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational, Gal will be rooting hard for Florida this weekend while she competes in Hawaii. Her custom-designed golf bag has caught the attention of many spectators with Gator logos adorning both sides of her bag along with the German and American flags embroidered on the front.
“I've gotten some comments that it's the nicest looking bag on the tour,” Gal beamed. “I have a Gator head cover on my 3-wood and my utility and I also have a Gator ball marker. I really wish I could be at the (Lady) Gator (Invitational) to be cheering for them but I know they will have a great week.”
Gal and her former coach at Florida, Jill Briles-Hinton, were able to keep in touch via text messaging at the SBS Open.
“She's racking up the dollars and it's going to continue to grow,” Briles- Hinton said in Monday's all-sports press conference at the UF women's club. “Making the cut in her first event is a great accomplishment and something to be proud of. She's a wonderful athlete, a great golfer and a hard worker.”
Stacy Prammanasudh is the defending Fields Open champion from 2007.
