“We got two singles matches that lasted two hours,” head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We need that stuff and we've been doing well in practice but it's not quite the same with the jersey. I was very happy to see Megan (Alexander) and Whitney (Benik) win close matches. I would have liked to see the same resistance against Lolita (Frangulyan) and Marrit (Boonstra). They've been doing great in practice. I've known (Troy head coach) Eric (Hayes) a long time and we knew they were going to come in and fight.”
It took the senior combo of Whitney Benik (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Lolita Frangulyan (Bradenton, Fla.) just two minutes to take the first game and set the tempo for a dominating UF doubles performance.
The duo on court three of freshman Julia Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Csilla Borsanyi (Budapest, Hungary) finished first to clinch the first game for Florida, dispatching Troy's pair of Stephanie Vieria and Caroline Jounia in 29 minutes, 8-0. Troy kept things close early on courts two and three but Florida pulled away convincingly to claim 8-2 decisions.
Benik kicked off singles action with a quick game and 1-0 lead over Troy's Rawia El Sisi. Benik cruised to a 40-love advantage before taking the early lead on the scoreboard. Benik blanked El Sisi in the first set but the Trojan showed grit, taking the second set, 6-4, before Benik claimed the third, 6-2. The Gators followed her lead and all won their first games in systematic fashion.
Frangulyan, freshman Marrit Boonstra (Groningen, The Netherlands) and Benik cruised to first-set margins, 6-0. Frangulyan beat Jounia in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, on court six in just 40 minutes and Boonstra followed two minutes later in identical form with a 6-0,6-0, straight-set win against Leonie Guijt.
“I thought I played pretty well. I did what I had to do and did everything I had to do. It always feels nice to get as much rest as I can get,” Frangulyan said. “Troy was a pretty good team and gave us a great show of tennis. We just need to get the confidence and get it rolling.”
For Boonstra, who has yet to lose a collegiate match, it marked her third consecutive double-bagel as he claimed straight-set shutouts against Central Florida and Stetson.
Following a nine-minute rain delay, Borsanyi needed just one game to claim her tilt against Annabelle Bares in straight sets. Bares claimed three consecutive games but Borsanyi iced her in deuce to win, 6-2, 6-3. Bares was ranked No. 65 in singles.
Sophomore Anastasia Revzina (Moscow, Russia) battled back from a 4-1 deficit and tied the first set at four in her first action of the year. Revzina would proceed to take the next two games to claim momentum and pave the way for a first set in her favor. She breezed through her second set, 6-2, to claim her first singles win of the season.
Sophomore Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) pulled out a critical third game in the first set after she and Trojan Mirte De Bakker were engaged in an ongoing battle after deuce. De Bakker took the second set 6-3 but Alexander was on the winning end of a tiebreaker, 10-8.
Florida is back in action next Tuesday as it hosts South Florida at 5 p.m.
