Men's Tennis Opens SEC Play With 6-1 Win At Vanderbilt

For the fifth time in seven seasons under head coach Andy Jackson, the Florida men's tennis team opened Southeastern Conference action with a victory as the 11th-ranked Gators topped No. 29 Vanderbilt, 6-1, Friday inside the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. The win, which was the first on the road for the Gators this year, improved UF's record to 6-3. The Commodores fell to 8-2 overall.
Florida won the doubles point for the fifth time this season and moved to 5-0 this season when doing so. UF's Alex Lacroix and Nestor Briceno teamed up for an 8-2 win over Vanderbilt's Vijay Paul and Adam Baker on court three. The tandem improved to 8-1 on the year with the victory. Greg Ouellette and Jeff Dadamo gave the Gators the point by edging Ryan Preston and Evan Dufaux, 9-8 (6) on the top court to go to 2-1 in dual matches.
In singles play, the Gators jumped to a 3-0 lead with wins by Tyler Hochwalt and Dadamo on courts five and four, respectively. Hochwalt defeated Dufaux, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, while Dadamo took out Nick Cromydas, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Hochwalt leads the Gators with an 8-1 singles mark.
After a loss at the top of the order, UF got the win it was looking for when Lacroix (No. 58) clinched the match by defeating Bryan Salcedo on court three. (6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4).
Briceno added to the Gator point column with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 showing against Paul (No. 68) on court two where the UF senior remains perfect since moving up in the lineup three matches ago. Against Paul, Briceno posted a score of 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 to get his third win over a ranked opponent this year.
Johnny Hamui closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Alex Zotov on court six. Hamui has won his last five matches, which is the longest active streak on the squad in duals.
Florida continues league action and remains on the road as the Gators close out the weekend at No. 54 Kentucky on Sunday. The match begins at 1 p.m. ET.
