When most college students were seeking rest and relaxation during Spring Break last week, University of Florida freshman Julia Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) was securing her 15th career Gold Ball, as she paired with her dad to win the USTA Senior National Father-Daughter Indoor Doubles Championships on Saturday.
The Gator rookie and her father, Dr. Richard Cohen, traveled to the South Barrington Club as the No. 2 seed and won the event with a thrilling 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (6) victory in the final over the top-seeded team of Bill and Stephanie White.
The Cohen's found themselves down 6-5 in the third-set tiebreak when Julia smacked a backhand winner down the line to even the score, which gave them the momentum to win the next two points en route to capturing the Gold Ball, which is symbolic of a national title.
"Julia really won us the match," Richard expressed. "Her transition game has improved so much and she's become such a better doubles player since she's been working with (UF head coach) Roland (Thornqvist) and (Associate Head Coach) Dave. We'll give them an assist on this Gold Ball."
Cohen and her third-ranked Gator teammates return to collegiate competition on Friday, March 21st, when Florida (10-1, 4-0 SEC) plays host to Ole Miss beginning at 5 p.m.
