Baseball's Toledo Named SEC Frosh of the Week
Monday, March 24, 2008 | Baseball
University of Florida right-hander Tommy Toledo (Tampa, Fla.) was chosen as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday after capturing the finale of the Gators' series victory over eighth-ranked Ole Miss. Classmate Josh Adams (Jacksonville, Fla.) had collected the honor last week.
Toledo ran his season ledger to a perfect 4-0 by limiting the Rebels to six hits and a run over a career-high seven innings on Easter Sunday afternoon as UF claimed the rubber game of the weekend series in Oxford, 10-2. He also lowered his earned run average to 1.93. Florida (17-4/5-1 SEC) had not defeated UM on the road in a series since March 28-30, 1997.
The righty is now 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in league play with wins over Auburn and Ole Miss. He surrendered just a fourth-inning run yesterday and worked at least five innings for his fifth consecutive collegiate start. Eleven of the 18 outs Toledo recorded were on fly balls. On the season, he is limiting opponents to a .200 batting average.
The No. 18 Gators return to action on Tuesday by hosting Jacksonville (13-7/7-5 Atlantic Sun) at 6:30 p.m. in the front end of a home-and-home series. Freshman right-hander Travis Lawler (College Station, Texas) (1-0, 5.59) will oppose Dolphin freshman right-hander Sean Green (1-0, 4.50).
