Men's Tennis Falls To Georgia, 5-2

The No. 17 University of Florida men's tennis team pushed No. 3 Georgia on the doubles courts, but fell short, and the Bulldogs went on to take a 5-2 decision Sunday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. With the loss, the Gators slipped to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the league. Georgia improved to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in SEC play.
“I feel like we had a lot of positives today,” said UF head coach Andy Jackson. “Even with those, Georgia was too good. There is a lot we can do to get better.”
Florida was edged in a doubles point that came down to court one where 60th-ranked Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg held off UF's 59th-ranked Greg Ouellette and Jeff Dadamo, 9-8 (4). Florida's win in doubles came when Geoffrey Barton and Tyler Hochwalt defeated Drake Bernstein and Josh Varela on three, 8-5.
On the singles courts, Florida evened the match when Tyler Hochwalt defeated Christian Vitulli on court five, 6-2, 6-3. With the win, the UF newcomer improved to 10-1 on the season, which leads all Gators.
Florida's other point came when sixth-ranked Greg Ouellette took out fifth-ranked Travis Helgeson on the top court in three sets (1-6, 6-1, 6-1). The victory was the first over a top-10 ranked opponent this season and improved the senior to 12-5 on the year against all ranked opponents.
Florida returns to action Tuesday, March 18, as the Gators host No. 14 Tennessee at 2 p.m. The Gators and Vols were scheduled to meet March 7, but the match was postponed due to inclement weather.
