No. 4/15 T&F Sends Three To SEC Weekly Honors
Tuesday, April 1, 2008 | Track and Field
University of Florida junior Willie Perry (Lenoir, N.C.) and freshman Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) have been named Southeastern Conference Male Runner and Male Freshman of the Week, respectively, while sophomore Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla) has been selected as Female Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The three honors bestowed upon the Gators on Tuesday improved the program's league-leading total of SEC weekly awards to 11 since the beginning of the 2008 indoor season, while UF's five outdoor weekly honors through two weeks are just one less than the team earned over the course of the entire indoor season. Perry and Proctor also became the eighth and ninth UF athletes, respectively, to be recognized by the league this year.
A two-time individual winner and the anchor of UF's winning 4x100m relay at the Hurricane Challenge in Miami, Perry is the national leader in the 200m with last weekend's first-place time of 20.76. He is also ranked fifth in the country in the 100m after posing a mark of 10.39 en route to winning the event at the Hurricane Challenge, and his efforts also helped propel the Gators to sixth place on the NCAA 4x100m relay list with a time of 39.94.
Wilks earned his third overall honor of the campaign, and second Freshman of the Week nod, after turning in a pair of NCAA regional-qualifying times and manning the second leg of Florida's 4x100m relay at the Hurricane Challenge. He took third in the 100m in Miami with a mark of 10.51, while stopping the watches at 21.18 in the 200m to finish fourth. He was named both SEC Male Runner and Freshman of the Week on Jan. 22 after a collegiate debut at the Big Ten/SEC Challenge in which he won a pair of events and put up an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the 60m.
Competing at the Florida State Relays in Tallahassee, Proctor won the long jump with a career-best leap of 6.34m/20-9.75. The performance placed her third on the NCAA descending order list, while also vaulting her into eighth place on UF's all-time outdoor list. She is the second Florida jumps specialist to win an SEC weekly honor this year, joining high-jumper Liene Karsuma (Riga, Latvia), who was named Female Freshman of the Week on Feb. 5.
The Gators will be back in action this weekend when they host the 64th annual Pepsi Relays at Percy Beard Track on Friday and Saturday. Typically one of the largest regular-season meets in the South each year, the action will kick off at 10 a.m. ET on both days with the commencement of the high school field events. Live results will be available via www.GatorZone.com.
