Women's Golf in 20th Place After Day One of the NCAA Championships

The fourth-ranked University of Florida women's golf team finished in 20th place at the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Women's Golf Championship at the University of New Mexico's Championship Golf Course on Tuesday. The Lady Gators shot 13-over-par 301 on the day.
“We didn't have a good round,” UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “The girls were ready, but I think that they came out a little bit too worked up and too excited. They did get settled down, but it just never clicked for them. Hannah (Yun) had a great round and Jessica (Yadloczsky) was close to a great round but she faltered coming in.”
The East Regional champion Lady Gators teed off against West Regional champions USC Trojans and the Central Regional winners UCLA Bruins. Entering the tournament, the Trojans squad won three tournaments in a row, including the Pac-10 Championships. USC finished atop of the leader board on Tuesday, carding a four-under par 284. The Bruins, who placed second in the Pac-10 Championships, finished the round in second place at 289 (+1).
“We faced great competition and it looks like we are going to be coming at it from behind this week,” the 2008 SEC Coach of the Year said. “So we will make our charge tomorrow, we have to. We are not out of this tournament by any means and can always have a statistical anomaly going the other way tomorrow.”
The Lady Gators were led by freshmen Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) and Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.). Yun, who shot a 73 (+1) on the day, made eight pars on the first nine holes and entered the turn at 1-over. Currently tied for 23rd place, she had two birdies on the back stretch, including one on the 18th hole. After making a birdie on the first hole, Yadloczky had nine consecutive pars until bogeying on the 11th hole to bring her to an even-par 45 through 11. Bogies on the 15, 16 and 17 brought her to 75 (+3). She currently sits tied for 53rd on the leader board.
Senior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) ended the day just four strokes over par, carding a 76 at the Championship Course, good for a tie for 68th. Redshirt junior Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) finished the opening round of the tournament tied for 85th place, scoring a 5-over 77.
Redshirt freshman Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Ill.) carded an 82 (+10), landing in a tie for 122nd place to begin her first NCAA Championship appearance.
Florida will tee off with UCLA and Southern California in the first group on Wednesday, May 21 at 10 a.m. ET. Tee times have yet to be set for the third round of the NCAA Championships, taking place on Thursday and the final day of competition on Friday, May 23.
