USA Swimming announced University of Florida head coach Gregg Troy as an assistant coach of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team Sunday evening. Troy will serve as an assistant coach to the U.S. men in Beijing and will join men's head coach Eddie Reese and two other assistant coaches in Bob Bowman and Frank Busch.
“Anytime you have the chance to be a part of the U.S. Olympic team, it's an honor,” Troy said. “It's also an honor and a tribute to my staff. I'm glad to have been surrounded by so much help and so many great athletes.”
Troy, alongside the coaches and members of the U.S. swim team, will head west to Palo Alto, Calif., Monday to endure training camp before heading overseas for competition in Beijing August 9-17.
Joining Troy in Palo Alto and then in Beijing as 2008 U.S. Olympic team qualifiers are former Gators Caroline Burckle, Ryan Lochte and Dara Torres. As recent graduates of UF, both Burckle (2008) and Lochte (2006) still reap the benefits of Troy's continuing instruction as they prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Named the 2008 SEC Women's Swimming Coach of the Year, Troy has previously found success in international competition in both head coaching and assistant coaching capacities. Troy was in Melbourne, Australia, in 2007 as an assistant coach with the U.S. Men's World Championships Team. He has also served as the head coach for the U.S. Team at the World Championships in 2001, head coach of the U.S. Team for the Pan American Games in 1999, head coach of the Thailand Olympic team at the 1992 games in Barcelona, assistant coach for the 2004 U.S. Women's FINA World Short Course Championships, assistant coach for the U.S. Women's Team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and the head coach for the U.S. Pan American Team in 1995.
Active international Gator Olympians that are presently under Troy's tutelage include Bradley Ally (Barbados), Brett and Shaune Fraser (The Cayman Islands), Gabriel Mangabeira (Brazil), Ricardo Monasterio (Venezuela), Omar Pinzon (Colombia), Gemma Spofforth (Great Britain), Adam Sioui (Canada), J.B. Walsh (Philippines).
In his career, Troy has tutored more than 50 Olympians, over 200 All-America swimmers and has coached athletes to more than 150 U.S. and international records. In all, Troy has guided six gold medal winners, four silver medalists and three bronze winners.
Also preparing for a coaching role in the 2008 Olympic Games is current Gator associate head coach Anthony Nesty. Nesty will serve as a coach for the Suriname Olympic swim team.
A former Gator, Nesty was a five-time individual NCAA Champion for UF and an Olympian for his home country, Suriname. Nesty concluded his swimming career at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Nesty broke into the international coaching scene following his career as a swimmer, serving as an assistant coach for Suriname at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
“It is an honor to represent Suriname as a coach at the 2008 Summer Olympics,” Nesty said. “It will be equally exciting to attend the Olympic Games this summer, especially since several of our own swimmers will be competing, representing their own countries including Barbados (Ally), Cayman Islands (S. & B. Fraser), Philippines (Walsh), Colombia (Pinzon), Great Britain (Spofforth) and of course United States (Lochte & Burckle).”
Prior to the start of the 2008 Games, Nesty will take a group of swimmers, including six international Gators in Alley, Brett and Shaune Fraser, Monasterio, Pinzon and Walsh, to the Philippines for a training camp stint before heading to Beijing.
