Senior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) shot rounds of 69 and 71 in stroke play to finish in a tie for tenth place at the 2008 U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. Horschel advances to the match play portion that continues today.
Horschel got off to a good start on Monday, with a birdie on the first hole. He finished the front nine at one-under before dropping in another birdie on No. 10. He gave one stroke back with a bogey on No. 12 and finished the first round with a one-under par 69.
In the second round, Horschel got off to a rough start with bogies on the first two holes. He followed that up with a birdie on the par-four third, and trading bogey and birdie on holes five and six, respectively. He made the turn at one-over par and had one birdie and one bogey on the back nine to finish the round at one-over 71.
Horschel's two-day total of even-par 140 was good enough for tenth place. He will advance to the first round of match play and take on Drew Lethem, who plays collegiately at Georgia Southern. You can follow the match live online HERE.
Four other Gators qualified for the stroke play portion of the tournament and did not advance to match play: junior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), incoming freshman Mu Hu (Shen Zhen, China), junior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and sophomore Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.).
