Florida Men's Tennis Continues Action at Southern Intercollegiate

One member of the University of Florida men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of his respective singles draws with a pair of victories, while one UF doubles team made it to the quarterfinals at the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Ga. on Saturday.
Freshman Joey Burkardt (St. Augustine, Fla.) was victorious for the second-straight day, defeating the No. 7 seed Lucas Jovita of South Florida in three sets. Burkhardt rallied back from a 0-6 loss in the first set to win 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 and advance to face Bo Ladyman (Furman) in the Round of 16. Burkhardt defeated Ladyman convincingly, 6-1, 6-1, and will face fourth seed Enrique Olivares (ETSU) in the quarterfinals.
Fellow freshman Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) also defeated a seeded opponent, knocking off the 12th seed Jamal Adderly (South Florida), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. With the win, Cueto advanced to the Round of 16 to face the No. 9 seed Javier Garrapiz (Georgia). Cueto failed to advance to the quarterfinals.
In Division I singles consolation play, sophomore Johnny Hamui (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) notched a victory over Charlotte's Chris Huynh in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Also in the Division I singles draw, sophomore Erik Corace (Naples, Fla.) defeated Eric Noble of Davidson, 6-3, 6-7(5), 1-0 (11-9).
Gators Cueto and Burkhardt defeated Jamie Hunt/Javier Garrapiz (Georgia), 8-3, to advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday.
