Wednesday, January 7, 2009 | Men's Tennis
The University of Florida men's tennis team was ranked 10th in the first set of Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings, while several members of the squad were ranked individually.
Freshman Joey Burkhardt (St. Augustine, Fla.), sophomore Tyler Hochwalt (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and freshman Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) were all ranked in the top-100 on the singles poll.
Burkhardt, who was ranked 64th, is coming off a strong fall season in which he posted an 11-4 record in singles play. Just three spots below Burkhardt was Hochwalt, who finished the fall campaign with an 11-5 mark. Cueto tallied an 8-1 record in the fall including a win over Hochwalt in the finals of the Seminole Invitational and was ranked 88th in the poll.
Florida is just one of six teams from the Southeastern Conference to be included in the preseason rankings as Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, LSU and Alabama all made the poll. In-state rivals Florida State and Miami are also listed in the first set of 2009 rankings, coming in at 11th and 17th, respectively.
The Gators kick off the fall season at the SEC Indoor competition on Jan. 16-19. For more information, visit www.GatorZone.com.
