Women's Tennis Wins Four of Five Singles Matches to Highlight Saturday's Play
Sunday, November 8, 2009 | Women's Tennis
The Gators captured four of five singles matches and two of three on the doubles court during the second day of play at the sixth-annual Kitty Harrison Invitational held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Suiting up for the Gators in this individual tournament held in North Carolina were Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands), Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.), Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) and Anastasia Revzina (Russia).
Five Gators suited up for singles action against players from William & Mary, with Embree, a freshman, netting a 7-6, 6-2 victory over 107th-ranked Ragini Acharya. Revzina and Mather earned three-set victories, respectively, while Barlett led her match against Lauren Sabacinski, 6-3, 2-0, when Sabacinski defaulted.
“At one point we were trailing on most of the singles courts and we were forced to dig deep and rally,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “I liked that we were pushed and then responded the way we did.”
On the doubles court, UF's lone loss of the three matches against North Carolina was the tandem of Embree and Revzina, who pushed 18th-ranked Shinann Featherston and Katrina Tsang, but fell, 9-7. The Gators' Bartlett and Mather gutted out a 9-8 (4) decision and Boonstra and Borsanyi tallied a 9-7 score.
Action concludes Sunday, when the Gators square off against Georgia Tech in doubles, before wrapping up on the singles court against North Carolina.
The Gators competed against players from 11 other schools, including Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, N.C. State, Princeton, TCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech and William & Mary.
This weekend is the final competition of the fall season for the Gators, who return to the courts on January 15, 2010, at the Freeman Memorial held in Las Vegas, before launching their 2009-10 dual match schedule on Jan. 24 playing host to North Texas at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
