Softball's Enea Earned Semifinalist Recognition for Wooden Cup Award
Monday, December 14, 2009 | Softball
University of Florida senior Francesca Enea (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was named a semifinalist for the Sixth Annual Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup presented by Athletes for a Better World.
The award is presented to two distinguished athletes from any sport – one intercollegiate and one professional – that best display character, teamwork, and citizenship, the attributes Athletes for a Better World deems central to transforming individuals, sport and society. The award establishes the recipients as athletes of excellence both on and off the field, role models both as performers and persons, the most important and distinctive honor athletes can achieve.
Enea was one of 20 semifinalists named in 2009 and one of two from the Southeastern Conference. Senior quarterback Tim Tebow was a finalist in 2008 and former Gator Brandon McArthur also a semifinalist.
The UF slugger currently holds seven records at Florida, including the single-season and career home run and RBI leads. She also ranks in the top 10 on 15 other single-season lists and eight career lists. She showed her true drive and character by playing through on a torn ACL twice in her career.
Off the field, Enea is involved in a great deal of community service. She created and organized Swing for Cancer, which gives fans a chance to watch Florida student-athletes and coaches try to hit against Florida's All-American pitchers while raising money for cancer research. She also researched and implemented a plan to “adopt” a 13-year-old girl with a brain tumor through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. She took it upon herself to plan the ceremony, which took place before a fall game. She mentors students and hospital patients in Gainesville and is currently the co-chair of Gator Tracks, which collects and donates sneaks to over 400 local children in need of new shoes at the holidays.
For her efforts, she was named to the SEC Community Service team as a junior and was award a Point of Light Award. She has also been an SEC Academic Honor Roll student every year of her career and was part of the 2009 team that earned the fifth-highest GPA in the nation.
