Four Gators scored in double digits as the No. 13 Florida Gators defeated Florida A&M, 80-59, on Tuesday night at the O'Connell Center. Senior forward Dan Werner (Middletown, N.J.) led the Gators in scoring and rebounds with 16 points and nine boards. With the win, Florida improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2005.
Junior forward Alex Tyus (St. Louis, Mo.) added 15 points and five rebounds, while redshirt junior center Vernon Macklin (Portsmouth, Va.) and sophomore guard Erving Walker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out the leading scorers with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Macklin and junior forward Chandler Parsons (Casselberry, Fla.) both tallied seven rebounds.
Parsons was three-of-nine from the field, tallying seven points of the bench.
The Rattlers used a 17-4 run to turn a 30-16 deficit into a tight game. However after holding on to a 34-33 lead, Werner hit a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Gators a little extra cushion heading into the locker room. Werner finished 4 of 6 from behind the arc.
Florida opened the second half with a 23-4 run to keep the momentum in its favor. The Gators shot 52 percent from the field and made 7 of 20 from 3-point range. They overcame 17 turnovers and had a 41-31 rebounding advantage. The Rattlers shot 40 percent and had 20 turnovers.
Christopher Walker led the Rattlers with 19 points and six rebounds. Yannick Crowder, Amin Stevens and Dale Hughes had eight points each for FAMU.
The Gators hit the road to face Jacksonville on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Jax Veterans Arena. The game will be broadcast live on FS Florida.
