The seventh-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team defeated Western Michigan 7-0 on Sunday at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. With the win, the Gators advance to the Round of 16 in the ITA National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc. on Feb. 12-15.
“I was very impressed with Western Michigan,” said head coach Roland Thornqvist. “They were very professional, classy and tough. They didn't come in here intimidated. I was very impressed with them today. To credit our players, we continued to press forward and we were able to pull away in the second set.”
Once again, the Orange and Blue jumped out to an early lead by claiming the doubles point. The No. 18-ranked tandem of juniors Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) and Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands) downed the Broncos' Emily Dudzik and Yumi Matsuto 8-2 on court one. Freshman Jessica Alexander (Dallas, Texas) and junior Anastasia Revzina (Moscow, Russia) teamed up to clinch the doubles point on court two with an 8-4 win over Western Michigan's Ashley Moccia and Jenny Nalepa.
The Gators' final doubles team of freshmen Jo Mather (Duluth, Ga.) and Barbara Pinterova (Slovakia) held a 6-2 advantage on court three but play was stopped when the doubles point was won on court two.
In singles action, UF's Megan Alexander made quick work of Nalepa at the No. 3 singles position, taking just 57 minutes to win 6-3, 6-0. Revzina pushed the Florida lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court two over Dudzik.
In the clinching match at No. 3 singles, Jessica Alexander took the first set from Amanda Moccia 6-3 and jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the second set. She then finished it off to win 6-3, 6-1 and help the Gators advance to the next round of the tournament.
