Mederios, Moser Win Events, Notch NCAA Marks at Jimmy Carnes
Sunday, February 8, 2009 | Track and Field
Florida track and field's Keely Medeiros (Luziana, Brazil) and Natalie Moser (Tampa, Fla.) each won their respective events and notched NCAA provisional-qualifying marks to highlight the Gators' performance at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational hosted by the Gainesville Sports Commission on Saturday at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
Moser captured the women's pole vault event with a season-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying leap of 13-4.25/4.07m. Gator athletes finished in each of the top five slots in the women's pole vault on Saturday. Sophomore Daisy Glasser (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) finished tied for second with senior Lauren Menke (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who recorded a career-best indoor leap of 12-5.50/3.80m.
Medeiros notched an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark for the fourth consecutive week in winning the women's shot put with a toss of 51-5.50/15.68m.
Hurdlers Jarius Cooper (Palm Coast, Fla.), Paige Morton (Stockbridge, Ga.) and Kallinka Pitt (Largo, Fla.) all participated in the 55-meter hurdles.
The meet is named in honor of legendary former University of Florida head men's track and field coach Jimmy Carnes (1965-76), who later went on to a distinguished career as a key contributor and advocate for track and field on the national and international level. He recently was inducted into USA Track and Field's National Hall of Fame.
During Carnes' 12-year tenure as Florida's head track and field coach, he directed the Gators to 15 top-three finishes at the Southeastern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships combined, including SEC indoor championships in each of his final two seasons as the program's head coach. Carnes' Florida teams went 93-3 overall in dual meets during his career.
Carnes mentored 65 Southeastern Conference individual champions (indoor and outdoor) and 24 All-America selections during his tenure as Florida's head coach. He also mentored Ron Jourdan (High Jump, 1969), Earmonn O'Keefe (1,000 yd, 1972), Beaufort Brown (600 yd, 1973) and the men's mile relay (1975) to indoor national championships during his coaching career with the Gators.
Florida returns to action Friday-Saturday, February 13-14, when it sends split squads to the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
The University of Florida is home of the 2009 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. For all of the latest information on Gator Track and Field, log on to www.GatorZone.com.
