Wednesday, March 11, 2009 | Men's Tennis
Sophomore Alex Lacroix (Paris, France) was named Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Wednesday. Lacroix went 3-0 in both doubles and singles in eighth-ranked Florida's victories over then-No. 15 Florida State, No. 11 Kentucky and No. 37 Vanderbilt.
No. 34 Lacroix began the week by defeating the first of two ranked opponents, No. 42 Clint Boyles of FSU, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, on Tuesday. With the SEC opener versus No. 11 Kentucky tied 3-3, he led the Gators to the victory on court one by defeating the second-ranked singles player in the nation in a three-set thriller. Lacroix downed No. 2 Bruno Agostinelli, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 and extended the Gators' home court record to 9-0 in 2009. In his final match of the weekend, he needed only 1:07 to defeat Nick Cromydas of Vanderbilt on court one, 6-0, 6-1. The Paris, France-native is now 13-2 in dual match play and has not lost a singles match at home for the Gators.
In their first week as a ranked pair, No. 80 Lacroix and his partner Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) began the week by defeating Baily/Sykut of FSU, 9-8 (1) in their first match on court two. The pair also defeated Musialek/Gonzalez of Kentucky, 8-7 (1) on Friday. In only 32 minutes, Lacroix and the former SEC Freshman of the Week downed DiValerio and Jones of Vanderbilt, 8-2. Lacroix and Cueto are currently 12-1 as a pair, claiming 11 consecutive wins in 2009, and are the only Gators to be honored by the SEC this season.
The Gators continue SEC play as they travel to Athens to face the No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs on Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET and to Knoxville to take on No. 6 Tennessee on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Live scoring and official results can be found at www.GatorZone.com.
