No. 7 M-Tennis Drops 4-2 Decision to No. 2 Ole Miss
Saturday, March 28, 2009 | Men's Tennis
After a nearly five hour rain delay, the No. 7 UF men's team was defeated by No. 2 Ole Miss, 4-2. The clock struck exactly midnight by the time the match had been clinched. UF is now 11-6 and 2-3 in the SEC, while the Rebels move to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
Sophomore Alex Lacroix (Paris, France) and freshman Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) needed only a couple minutes back on court three to finish off Otto Sauer and Kalle Norberg, 8-6. Redshirt junior Antoine Benneteau (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) and freshman Joey Burkhardt (St. Augustine, Fla.) were narrowly defeated, 9-7, by the second-best doubles pair in the nation, Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge. The doubles point came down to court two, where, with both teams cheering on, sophomores Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, Fla.) and Johnny Hamui (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) downed Devin Britton and Tucker Vorster, 9-8 (9-7) to clinch the doubles point for Florida. UF has not dropped the doubles point at home all season.
It took less than an hour for Dadamo to dominate Chris Thiemann in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. With the victory, Dadamo earned his 20th win of the year in singles play.
After the Gators secured the 2-0 victory, they suffered three single losses in a row. Benneteau fell to ten Berge, 6-1, 6-4. In his first appearance in a dual match, sophomore Tyler Hochwalt (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was also defeated in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The match on court two between Lacroix and Britton could not have been any closer. After No. 14 Lacroix took the first set, 6-4, he dropped the following two, 3-6 and 7-5, to put the Rebels within one match of taking the victory.
No. 24 Cueto fought a close match against No. 31 Berg, but it was not enough in the end. The freshman was defeated 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-2, clinching the match for Ole Miss. With the match decided, Burkhardt's duel against Sauer was called, after the two battled to take it to a third and final set.
The Gators return to action on Sunday as they face Mississippi State in Starkville at 1 p.m. Check www.GatorZone.com for official results.
