University of Florida senior golfer Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2009 The Ben Hogan Award, the most prestigious award in men's college golf. Chesapeake Energy, in association with Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf (FOG) and the GCAA, announced the semifinalists on Thursday.
The Hogan is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during a 12-month period.
Horschel, a three-time All-American, has enjoyed an outstanding senior year. In his eight tournament appearances during the 2008-09 season, he has finished in the top seven six times. He tied for first at the 2009 SunTrust Gator Invitational, eventually losing in a seven-hole playoff to teammate Toby Ragland. Horschel also had top-five finishes at the Carpet Capital Collegiate and the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational.
In amateur action, Horschel was a member of the 2008 U.S. Palmer Cup team that traveled to Scotland last summer. He was also a part of the American team that took second place at the 2009 World Amateur Team Championships last fall in Australia. Horschel also advanced to the Round of 32 at both the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships last summer.
The other semifinalists are Jorge Campillo of Indiana, Alabama's Bud Cauley, Rickie Fowler and Morgan Hoffmann of Oklahoma State, Southern California's Matthew Giles, Clemson's Kyle Stanley, Nick Taylor of Washington, Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale and Mike Van Sickle of Marquette.
Three finalists named on May 7 will be invited to Colonial Country Club in Fourth Worth, Texas, for the Hogan Award presentation on the evening of May 22.
