Gators Look to Carry Momentum Into Auburn
Friday, April 17, 2009 | Track and Field
The University of Florida track and field teams look to carry over the momentum from one of the most successful Florida Relays in program history when they travel to Auburn, Ala., this weekend to participate in the War Eagle Invitational.
The meet begins at 5 p.m. EST Friday at Hutsell-Rosen Track in Auburn, Ala., with the hammer throw and the invitational section of the 1,500-meter run. The rest of the Gators' competitors commence action at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Live statistics will be available at: http://www.deltatiming.com/results/meet.aspx?yf=2009&mf=war_eagle
Participating teams in the meet include: Alabama (women only), Alabama-Huntsville, Alabama State, Auburn, Charlotte, University of the Cumberlands, Florida A&M, Georgia Southern, Indianapolis, Jacksonville State, Mercer, Mississippi State, Penn State, Samford, Tennessee State (men only), Troy, UAB, Vanderbilt (women only) and West Florida.
Florida has had a week off from competition after a successful weekend at the 65th-annual Pepsi Florida Relays, at which the Gators recorded an impressive 39 NCAA regional-qualifying marks and broke numerous personal-best times and marks.
“We're just trying to get better and we don't have any set parameters for that,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “We just want to keep the ball rolling; we don't want to take a step back. Having a weekend off I think was very, very good for us because a lot of emotion and a lot of effort went into the Florida Relays. I think the big thing for us this weekend is to just keep moving forward and have a solid weekend. We want to do well heading into Penn Relays and then stay healthy and get ready for the conference meet.”
Two Gators participating in this weekend's meet – freshman distance runner Genevieve LaCaze (Queensland, Australia) and sophomore thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo Bosnia) – earned weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference following the Pepsi Florida Relays. LaCaze was named the SEC Female Freshman of the Week, while Mesic was tabbed as the league's Male Field Athlete of the Week.
The Hutsell-Rosen Track debuted in April 2006 and played host to the 2008 SEC Outdoor Championships. It was named in honor of longtime coaches Wilbur Hutsell and Mel Rosen.
The University of Florida is home of the 2009 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. For all of the latest information on Gator Track and Field, log on to www.GatorZone.com.
