Friday, May 1, 2009 | Men's Golf
Seniors Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) and Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.) are among the 47 Gator student-athletes who will receive their degrees this weekend, as commencement ceremonies take place throughout the campus.
Horschel will be earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation, Parks & Tourism while Strickler earns a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics & Anthropology.
Horschel was named the SEC Golfer of the Year earlier this week and was also a unanimous first-team All-SEC selection. He joined Gator Great Gary Koch as the only two players in Florida golf history to earn first-team honors four times. Horschel leads the SEC in scoring average this season, averaging 71.15 strokes per round. He placed in the top seven in seven of nine tournaments this season. He shot par-or-better in 19 of his 26 rounds this season. He was the individual medalist at the recently-concluded SEC Championships and was also named SEC Golfer of the Week in March. Horschel is also a semifinalist for the 2009 Ben Hogan Award, college golf's most prestigious award.
Strickler is enjoying a successful senior season, earning his first collegiate victory at the Golden Ocala Collegiate in February, shooting six-under par. He has four top-25 finishes this season in seven tournament appearances, including a tie for 21st at the SEC Championship. Strickler has a 73.85 stroke average for the season, his lowest average as a Gator.
The Gators await an NCAA Regional bid to one of six host sites, May 14-16. The NCAA Championships take place May 27-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
